Selectmen approve $27.6M FY2027 budget, restore teaching positions

Berkley Selectmen unanimously recommend $27.6M FY2027 budget to town meeting. Town Administrator Matthew Chabot presented a Capital Improvement Plan prioritizing a second well for Berkeley Middle School ($110,000), a new police cruiser, upgraded criminal-justice computer systems ($40,000–$45,000), and a medium-sized dump truck for highway ($100,000), against $460,731 in available free cash and roughly $5 million in total departmental requests. The board voted to restore two K-8 teaching positions after lower-than-expected health insurance and Bristol Aggie assessment costs freed up funds, and restored the moderator's expense line for town meeting costs.
The budget goes to Annual Town Meeting on June 1.
